Philadelphia Eagles Player Spotlight: Free Safety Patrick Chung

Posted on Sep 11, 2013 | 0 comments

chung_campThe Philadelphia Eagles had some problems with the safety position last year. New head coach Chip Kelly didn’t waste any time bringing in one of his former players at the University of Oregon. While playing for Kelly, Chung was a four year starter and was named a two time first team all conference safety. He will be a presence both on the field and in the locker room.

Chung started his NFL career with the New England Patriots under Bill Belichick. His time there allowed him to become very familiar with the 3 – 4 defense. He also got to see first hand how a winning organization and locker room functions. This experience will be very valuable to a team like the Eagles that is looking to reestablish themselves as a contender.

He is already considered a leader in the locker room. That shouldn’t be any surprise to anyone because Chung’s favorite player when he was growing up was Brian Dawkins. The same can be said for him on the field. Chung could be seen getting his fellow defensive backs lined up prior to plays during the recent victory over the Washington Redskins.

The Eagles secondary will benefit from having a leader like Chung. He may not accumulate a large amount of interceptions but he can be counted on to provide solid coverage and be a player that won’t be afraid to come up and mix it up against the run.

Another thing that Chung brings is strong ties to the community. He launched a foundation in January called the Chung Changing Lives Foundation. This foundation is focused on improving the lives of children by giving access to enrichment and educational programs to those in need. Their goal is to make sure that children have equal access to what they call “character shaping experiences.”

Patrick Chung, feels he has been successful in part because his hard work and dedication allowed him to take advantage of unexpected opportunities as they arose. He sees the importance of providing these same opportunities to those who may not be able to have access. “There are so many kids that are talented but never get the opportunity to display their skills. That’s what Chung Changing Lives was was founded for, to give equal opportunities to all kids.” For more information on Chung Changing Lives, please go to www.chungchanginglives.org
